Dings Crusaders RFC National League Two South Saturday 6th March 2010 Worthing 35 - Dings Crusaders 7 Worthing 35 Dings Crusaders 7: Dings Crusaders' Jekyll and Hyde season continued to baffle their coaches and supporters as they slumped to yet another away defeat at the hands of Worthing. After achieving impressive results against Bridgwater & Albion, Rosslyn Park and Henley, the Bristol side travelled to West Sussex with high expectations, believing that once again that they could return with points in the bank. But Worthing are the leagues in-form side and have only been defeated once since the turn of the year –going down 29-6 to league leaders Barking –and any hopes Dings had of doing the double over them quickly evaporated. While the home side selected their options wisely and were clinical in their execution, the West Country men constantly shot themselves in the foot by attempting to play too much high-risk rugby from the wrong areas of the pitch and neglected to take the points when they were on offer. The Crusaders also had to contend with the impressive form of home full-back Matt McClean, who grabbed two tries, two conversions and two penalties for the Raiders. Jack Maslen (2) and Greg Walker also scored tries. Things seemed to go wrong from before the first whistle for Dings, who were hit by late withdrawals, forced into a reshuffle and then found themselves seven points adrift inside two minutes. Worthing won most of the tight battles, both tactically and physically, and the Lockleaze side will now have to regroup ahead of next week's clash with Southend at Landseer Avenue. All Dings had to show for their efforts was a try by skipper Stean Williams, converted by Tom Lukjaniec. Dings' forwards coach Dave Hilton said: "We had some promising phases of play but seemed to go astray at vital moments – loose passes and poor execution. We did create some chances but we couldn't finish anything off. They came into our 22 four times and each time they left with tries, so some harsh lessons have to be learned." |
