Ealing 37 Dings 28

Dings put in a fine performance against league leaders Ealing but were edged out in the final stages of a close well-matched contest. With the match poised at 29-28 to the home side going into the final ten minutes Dings had chances to win the game but it was the home side that found the vital score and a last minute penalty robbed Dings of what would have been a well deserved bonus point.

Wing Jack Tovey, who had a fine game for a personal tally of eighteen points, opened the scoring for Dings with a penalty in the opening minutes, Ealing replied on ten minutes with a try from full back Peter Hodgkinson after his pack had won a scrum against the head on the Dings twenty two. Dings were back in front two minutes later with a second penalty from Tovey.

With the play pretty even the home side got the upper hand at the end of the first quarter with two tries in two minutes, the first went to wing Owen Bruynseels after turnover at the lineout just inside the Dings twenty two and the second went to wing Richard Briggs who gathered a pinpoint cross kick from stand off Ben Ward. Ward added both conversions for 19-6 to the home side.

Dings replied on the half hour mark with a try for skipper Stean Williams after a good break from scrum half Steve Plummer, Tovey added the conversion. Ward slotted a penalty for Ealing before Dings struck a gain with a try from hooker Dave Wheeler after a good lineout take by lock Gareth Lloyd was driven over the line by the Dings pack, Tovey added the conversion for 22-20 to the home side with just two minutes left to half time. In the final play of the half Ealing secured a try bonus point with their fourth try, poor defending from Dings saw a simple move along the back line for full back Hodgkinson to touch down, Ward converted for 29-20 to the home side at half time.

The second half continued end to end and Dings got back to within a points with a well taken try and long range penalty from Tovey and could have taken the lead when wing Sylvan Edwards charge up the touchline was just brought down a yard from the try line.

With the score poised at 29-28 going into the final ten minutes lively wing Briggs sealed it for the home side with his second try from a long cut out pass from Ward. In the final minute of the game Ward added a penalty for Ealing to deny the visitors a losing bonus point.
