DINGS Crusaders bounced back from their disappointing 28-0 shut out away at Henley last week to record their first win since their 27-26 triumph over Lydney back in September by defeating a one-dimensional Worthing side at Landseer Avenue.
The result was largely due to the finishing power of their electric winger George Watkins who collected a hat trick of tries. The 19 year-old flyer
Worthing hit the front with a try from lock Charlie Mc Gowan in the eighth minute before the home side began to get into their stride. Crusaders Dings opened their account with two penalties from fly-half Adam Westall to edge in front before Watkins crossed for his first try in the 20th minute. The home pack made inroads into the visitors defence and then released the Dings backs who, showed good hands to release the left winger who raced in to score out wide. But the visitors hit back with a try from their other lock Joseph Launchbury who barged his way over from close range to make it 11-10 to Dings at the interval. Dings pack began to take control in the second half and dominated the set pieces, which allowed Jones and Westall to dictate the pace of the game and where the game took place. Another Westall penalty on 48 minutes extended the lead for Dings and was followed by Watkins's second try two minutes later. After several attempts by the forwards to bludgeon their way over, the ball popped out to Watkins who danced his way over for try number two.
But Watkins saved his best for last as his dazzling solo effort brought up his hat trick and the home crowd to its feet. Watkins received the ball on This was by no means a one-man show as the whole of the Dings team played their part in the victory but Dings certainly benefit from having the young finisher in their ranks.
Stean Williams, Club Captain "Every week that goes by without a win takes away 5% of your confidence going into the next game. We deserved to beat Rosslyn Park but gave it away in the last minute but today we came out with a completely different level of commitment and attitude. Now we must prove to ourselves how good we can be and try to find a way to take this sort of form on out travels"
