Dings Crusaders RFC National League Two South Saturday 28th November 2009 Dings 18 Westcombe Park 9 On a wet grey afternoon with conditions under foot very difficult Dings produced a very spirited dogged performance to record a much needed win over a very competitive Westcombe Park side who were well in the game right to the final whistle. Dings out scored the visitors two tries to nil but owed much to a very strong defensive effort with centres Sam Caven and Alex Dancer and flanker Pierre Panizzutti, in particular, outstanding all afternoon. The first quarter was played between the twenty-two’s with both sides struggling to gain any real penetration and stand offs Tom Lukjaniec for Dings and Lee Audis for the visitors exchanged long range penalties to open the scoring. The second quarter saw Dings forced onto the defensive with visiting skipper and lock John Chance stealing a couple of Dings lineouts to pressure the Dings line and Dings skipper Stean Williams countering with a couple of great turnovers to relieve the pressure. Dings took the lead on the half hour mark with another long-range penalty from Lukjaniec who narrowly missed with another attempt five minutes later. The forward exchanges were pretty competitive and it was no surprise when referee Andrew Jackson lost his patience three minutes from halftime and showed the yellow card to Williams from Dings and visitors flanker Will Thorpe, Audis kick the resultant penalty to level the scores at 6-6 on half time. The second half opened much as the first with both sides unable to find any cutting edge in attack and it was the visitors who took the lead with another long-range penalty from Audis, but the home side pack began to gain the edge in the set pieces and put the visiting pack under pressure at the scrum. A good period of driving from the Dings pack with the back row of Williams, Panizzutti and No 8 Gavin Curry all carry well, took Dings deep into the visitors twenty two and their dominance in the scrum proved decisive when the referee awarded a penalty try after three collapses of the try line, Lukjaniec converted for 13-9 to Dings on fifty five minutes.
Dings secured the vital win five minutes later with a brilliant try from experienced wing Sylvan Edwards. From a scrum just inside the Westcombe Park half No 8 Curry picked up and fed scrum half Neil Dipple who found full back Orlando Stott joining the line at pace who in turn passed to Edwards at full tilt who barrelled over two defenders to touch down in the corner.
