Canterbury 42 - Dings 15

Dings badly depleted by injuries and non-availabilities fell apart in the second half conceding four tries to a lively Canterbury side that took full advantage of some very sloppy play by Dings.

Canterbury took the lead in the second minute with a soft try for prop Mark Livesey who touched down in the corner unopposed after some very poor tackling from Dings. Adam Westall hit back for Dings two minutes later. Both sets of backs looked dangerous but it was the home side next on the score sheet with a penalty from Aussie stand off Phillip Gibson making his debut. Dings levelled the scores on twenty three minutes with a try from centre Alex Dancer after a sweeping move from deep in the Dings half between centre Jack Gadd, Westall and full back Orlando Stott.

After a string of penalties against Dings Gibson restored the home sides lead with a penalty on thirty-two minutes closely followed by a try after pressure on the Dings line. Westall had a good chance to reduce the arrears with a penalty just before half time but his effort went wide to leave the score at 16-8 to the home side at halftime.

After a pretty even first half Dings began to creek early in the second half with a series of unforced errors and aimless kicks continually gifting the ball back to Canterbury. Inevitably Canterbury took advantage with a try for scrum half Nick Woodbridge touching down from a five metre scrum driven over by his pack, Gibson added the conversion. Dings cause was not helped when lock Gareth Lloyd was binned in the fifty third minute and after some pretty average tackling by Dings wing Carlton Littlechild extended the home sides lead to 28-8 on the hour with a try in the right corner. Dings hit back with a good try for wing George Watkins from a neat delayed pass by replacement scrum half Steve Plummer, Westall added the conversion for 28-15 to the home side.

Dings chasing the game in the final ten minutes managed to gift two tries to Canterbury, the first saw Westall's attempted chip over the defence intercepted by flanker Peter Kelly for a run in under the posts and the second saw lock Rob Keir intercept a pass from Plummer again for a run in under the posts, both tries were converted by Gibson to complete a miserable day for Dings.
